guardianships and conservatorships Magellan LawA Conservator is appointed to control assets of an incapacitated adult or minor child. This person, or entity, is court appointed in cases where an adult is gravely disabled, not mentally stable, mentally incapacitated, or not able to take care of their own finances. An increasingly common example of conservatorships is an older person who develops dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. This person will also be assigned in the case of a minor child inheriting or winning a large sum of money. They will be in charge of disbursing this money when the minor child becomes 18.
